Most maternal and newborn deaths occur during and right after childbirth. Public health facilities are crucial for health services, especially those provided to mothers and children in rural India. Despite investments in facility infrastructure, there is scope to improve quality of services provided at these facilities.
This intervention aims to prevent avoidable deaths of mothers and newborns at facilities by supporting the staff to organize and manage health facilities better and improve their skills. It aims to improve the quality of care for mothers and newborns during intrapartum and immediate post-partum periods. The intervention covers multiple facility points that beneficiaries interact within the health and nutrition ecosystem—labour rooms, maternal and child health-related OPD services, and Newborn Stabilization Unit (NBSU).
The intervention is designed to –
• Build critical complication management skills to prevent avoidable deaths
• Strengthen facility governance by upskilling supervisors and establishing quality improvement centres
• Help organise labour rooms to ensure efficient management of the facility
• Institutionalising a continuous training cycle through government nurse mentors and establishing centres
